This course provides you with the skills and knowledge required to test, commission and maintain backflow prevention devices in water services. It covers the identification of requirements, preparation of work, commissioning and maintenance activities and finalisation of work including documentation.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) will be in attendance on the final day of training to conduct the external examination (4 hours) for those learners who wish to receive endorsement on their plumbing license in backflow prevention as a specialised class of plumbing.

 

Learners must hold VBA water supply registration and/or license.

This course has pre-requisite units which must be satisfied to be awarded this unit. Refer to Pre-Requisite tab for further details.

It is recommended that you have acquired language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 3 and Level 4 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

The following pre-requisite units must be satisfied to be awarded this unit:

  • CPCPCM2043 Carry out WHS requirements
  • CPCPWT3027 Install backflow prevention devices
  • CPCPCM3023 Fabricate and install non-ferrous pressure piping

24 hours over three (3) consecutive days. Includes a four (4) hour external practical assessment supervised by the VBA. Sessions run from 8.00am to 4.00pm.

Additional VBA Examination fees

As of July 2020 additional fees apply and are payable directly to the VBA. To sit the VBA practical and theory assessments there is a $173.40 fee. After successful completion there is an application fee of $31.50 that needs to be paid for the endorsement to be added to any current license or registration area. Assessment arrangements

Unit assessment requires learners to:

  • complete a theory assessment
  • complete a practical assessment which requires you to successfully test, commission and complete relevant testing documentation for the following valves:
    • three different double check valves
    • a single (testable) check valve
    • two different registered air gaps (including two different orifice sizes and inlet pressures)
    • three different reduced pressure zone devices.
  • removing and maintaining:
    • one double check valve
    • one reduced pressure zone device.

External assessment

The VBA will conduct a four (4) hour external assessment for those who wish to receive endorsement on their plumbing license in backflow prevention.

Course outcome

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify sources and gather information relevant to testing, commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
  • Apply safety and quality assurance requirements and demonstrate effective work methods relevant to testing, commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
  • Test, commission and undertake maintenance of high, medium and low hazard backflow prevention devices in water services.
  • Identify and complete all relevant documentation relevant to testing, commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.

Recognition

By successfully completing this course you will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

This unit is required by the Victorian Building Authority for registered\licensed plumbers who wish to seek endorsement in the specialised class of backflow prevention work. It is an accredited unit of competency in CPC40920 Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services.

Service Type A gas appliances

Course overview

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to diagnose and repair faults on domestic and commercial Type A gas appliances.

Work associated with this unit is undertaken within the scope of AS/NZS 5601:2013 Part 1 Gas installations and local licensing requirements (gas, electrical and plumbing).

 

Learners must hold VBA gas fitting registration and/or license.

This course has pre-requisite units which must be satisfied to be awarded this unit. Refer to Pre-Requisite tab for further details.

It is recommended that you have acquired language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 3 and Level 4 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

To be eligible to register with the VBA in the Type A Appliance Servicing class, you must:

  • hold registration in the Gasfitting work class
  • hold a Restricted Electrical Worker’s License
  • have completed CPCPGS4022A or CPCPGS4022 Service Type A appliances, or demonstrate knowledge and competence equivalent to that unit of competency
  • successfully complete the VBA’s examination of registration competencies for Type A Appliance Servicing work.

Assessment arrangements

Assessment for this course requires you to:

  • complete a theory assessment
  • undertake a practical assessment to disassemble, reassemble, diagnose and remedy gas system faults on multiple Type A gas appliances
  • undertake a practical assessment to convert a Type A gas appliance to operate on another gas type.

External assessment

The VBA will conduct an external assessment for those learners who wish to receive endorsement on their plumbing license in Type A gas appliance servicing. Assessment will occur on the final day of the training program. A payment of $173.40 is payable to the VBA for the assessment.

Install, commission and service Type B gas appliances

Course overview

This course covers the skills and knowledge to install, test, adjust, commission and service Type B gas appliances. Upon completion, you will be able to identify, diagnose and rectify system faults in Type B appliances.

This course is delivered by Gastrain under a third party agreement, details available upon request.

 

You must hold a restricted electrical workers licence

It is also recommended that you are able to demonstrate language, literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 3 and Level 4 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

To be eligible to register with the VBA in the Type B Gasfitting work, you must:

  • hold a Restricted Electrical Worker’s License
  • at a minimum, a Certificate III course that provides knowledge and competence in Type B Gasfitting work
  • have completed CPCPGS4023A  or CPCPGS4023 Install, commission and service Type B gas appliances, or demonstrate knowledge and competence equivalent to this unit of competency
  • successfully complete the VBA’s examination of registration competencies for Type B Gasfitting work.

To meet the VBA experience requirements, you must demonstrate practical experience that you were employed under supervision of a plumber who is licensed in Type B Gasfitting work for at least two years.

UEERL0004 Disconnect – reconnect electrical equipment connected to low voltage (LV) installation wiring

Course overview

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to It includes preparing electrical equipment for disconnecting and then reconnecting equipment connected to LV installation wiring. It also includes inspecting and testing the reconnected electrical equipment for safe operation, identifying and reporting electrical faults and providing status reports. This must be incidental to a primary or regular function of the workplace. 

You will develop the skills to safely disconnect and reconnect equipment such as composite appliances (air conditioners), water heaters and motors. It includes working safely, identifying supply arrangements, following isolation procedures, selecting and using testing and measuring devices, terminating and connecting cables and conductors, safely testing and reporting.

This course excludes disconnecting or reconnecting circuits at a switchboard or to general electrical accessories (including switches, socket outlets, circuit protective devices etc.); or installation of or alteration to any part of the fixed electrical wiring system (defined as electrical installing work).

This course does not cover rectifying faults.

Assessment arrangements

Assessment for this course requires you to:

  • have completed prerequisite unit UEECD0007 
  • complete a theory assessment related to UEERL0004
  • undertake practical assessment related to UEERL0004

External assessment

Approximately five (5) days after successful completion of the course, eligible you may undertake an external practical exam assessed by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) assessors to obtain your restricted electrical license (REL Class 2).

Outcome

On successful completion of UEERL0004 Disconnect - reconnect electrical equipment connected to low voltage (LV) installation wiring and UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace you will be able to:

  • Operate safely within the electrical working environment
  • Comply with WHS practices when working with electricity
