The flow-on effect – what’s in my pipe?

Industry Updates - Published August 2019

When there are construction works at a site there is always a risk that water and sewer assets could get damaged. When sewer assets are damaged, concrete can enter the drain leading to very costly repairs and the flow-on effect impacts not only the site but also neighbours, local businesses, roadways and public spaces.

Save time and money!

Follow the 5P’s of safe excavation:

Plan: Contact Dial Before You Dig and use SEWmap - South East Water’s free downloadable map which provides instant asset information.

Prepare: Review utility plans and contact the water authority for any questions. Use an accredited asset locator. http://www.dbydlocator.com/certified-locators/

Pothole: Prove asset locations safely by non-destructive excavation or hand digging.

Protect: e.g marking locations, cut and seal services, bring any unsealed sewer branches to surface, communicate.

Proceed: Once the 4 steps above have been followed.

Remember…

Dial before you dig and SEWmap are considered the first steps only.

Don’t forget…it’s your responsibility to ensure ALL water and sewer assets (including private sewer drains) are identified and protected prior to starting works.

Why not raise any unsealed sewer branches to surface so that they are visible?

What’s in it for you?

  • Reduce delays and disruptions on site
  • Reduce time consuming and costly repairs
  • Avoid reputation damage
  • Minimise damage to public and private property
  • Reduce insurance claims, excesses and premiums
