October is National Safe Work Month, an opportunity for workplaces across Australia to pause, reflect and take practical action to create safer and healthier workplaces.
This year’s theme is Safe work is for life, recognising that work health and safety is about more than preventing harm in the moment. It is about protecting workers’ lives, health and future.
For the plumbing and mechanical services industry, WHS is part of everyday business. National Safe Work Month is a chance to step back from the day-to-day and ask:
Are we doing everything we can to prevent harm before it happens?
Four weeks of workplace safety
Throughout October, National Safe Work Month will explore four key aspects of WHS:
For life: Why WHS matters
Start by reconnecting with why WHS matters: preventing harm and making sure workers can return home safely.
For health: What WHS protects
Look beyond immediate injuries to the physical and psychological health that work can affect.
For the future: The long-term impact
Consider how workplaces can reduce the long-term impact of work-related injury and illness and support workers if harm occurs.
For all: Action across all workplaces
Turn the conversations and learnings from October into practical action that continues beyond National Safe Work Month.
Start the conversation
The 2026 National Safe Work Month Activity Kit provides practical activities and discussion prompts for team meetings, toolbox talks and other workplace conversations.
For Week 1, workplaces are encouraged to discuss why they work safely, identify their top WHS hazards and choose one action to make work safer or healthier.
